‘To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.’ —Ralph Waldo Emerson
Imagine if…
‘Imagine if I had all that I needed to be myself.
Imagine if I was healthy, wealthy and wise enough to be who I am.
First, I would need to be wise enough to know who I am, to know and appreciate my real self.
I would need to know my life purpose and to understand how to make that purpose meaningful for myself and the other people in my life.
Then I would need to be wealthy enough to be who I am. I would need the internal strength to be authentically present in my life, and the support of a caring community of family, friends and colleagues to nurture my life journey.
And I would need to be healthy enough to be able to do the things that fulfil the expectations of my purpose. I would need to have the physical and mental capacity to make a difference in my lifetime for the people I care about.
And so…
If I spend time in reflective meditation I can access the wisdom I need to know who I am. If I know who I am, I will understand my purpose in life, and I will ‘know’ that my opportunity to be joyful is to live my life on purpose.
If I decide to live my life on purpose, then my presence within my communities will be an expression of my purpose.
The authenticity of that presence will enable me to build the meaningful relationships with ‘my people’ that will nurture and support my life journey. I will be enabled to co-create my future in the present with the people I care about and who care about me.
If I decide to live my life on purpose I will have a positive life attitude, which will enable and encourage me to be physically and mentally healthy. I will want to be as healthy as I can be, so that I can manifest my purpose and be fully present in my communities.
And the material wealth, the physical possessions and means of sustenance I need to be alive and to participate in my communities, will be no more than I need to live my life on purpose. If I have more than I need then I can share with others, and if I do not have enough I can expect my community to help.
Once I make the decision to live purposefully, then as Johan van Goethe reminds us:
‘… the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”
